Would you rather share a kiss than shake hands with a stranger? Most people wouldn’t, but do you know it is a fact that you could be at far greater risk of passing on or contracting an infection by shaking someone’s hands than by sharing a kiss?

The explanation for this is quite straightforward. Hand washing is an excellent infection preventive tool. Let’s face it, germs are everywhere. They are in the air, in water, in food, in the office, in the home, in the kitchen sink, in the laundry, in the shower and bath tubs, in the water closet, germs are virtually everywhere, but they are not indestructible. Germs that cause terrible infections such as salmonella, campylobacter, norovirus, E. coli, staphylococcus and more can circulate directly from person to person through the hands. Stomach germs can be passed on if you put your finger in your mouth or forget to wash your hands before preparing food after engaging your hands with unsanitary chores such as using the toilet.

The bottom line is this: breaking the chain of infection depends on how well you can wash your hands

. Hand washing can help to prevent the passing on of nasty and deadly viruses and bacteria. But hand washing goes beyond merely dipping your hands under a dribbling tap and thinking that will do. Far from it. Good hand washing is actually an art. Often poor hand washers are at risk of infecting themselves and passing the germs on to other people. Cultivating the habit of washing frequently is an indication of adopting one of the easiest ways to wipe out germs and reduce chances of becoming ill. It has been shown time and time again that washing the hands with soap and water is the first rule of basic hygiene. Regular hand washing may actually be more effective than drugs in preventing the spread of respiratory viruses such as influenza. Good hand hygiene is, in fact, the best option in the event of a flu pandemic. Antibacterial soaps have been marked as an effective and necessary way to lower risk of infection. However, many scientists fear that their widespread use could lead to a strain of resistant bacteria and cause the ingredients to lose effectiveness for the times when they really are needed, such as for surgeons prior to surgery. Studies have also found that soap and water work better than the waterless, alcohol based hand wipes and rubs. To make sure you’re actually removing germs when you wash your hands, follow this three-step hand-washing technique:

1. Always use warm water rather than cold water. Work up a good lather all the way up to your wrist for at least 10 or 15 seconds and don’t forget to get all surfaces including the backs of your hands, wrist, between your fingers and your fingernails. But there could be too much of a good thing. The skin is the primary defense against bacteria-not the soap. So resist the urge to become obsessive about washing your hands.

2. Don’t wash too frequently to avoid extracting many of the protective oils which can cause the skin to crack and bleed. Obsessive-compulsive washing can actually increase risk of getting sick by providing an entryway for potentially dangerous pathogens.

3. Mild to moderate washing is indicated but excessive washing, especially with harsh soaps is highly counter productive.

Have a healthy life.

Prevention Of C Diff, C. Difficile, Handwashing Versus Alcohol Gel

Iv’e always heard that if you have common sense, that’s what it takes to get through nursing school, and become a great nurse. Though I’m disillusioned with the common sense approach of the decision makers who set the standards of nursing practice for us to follow. In the heat of this folding economy, I find it necessary to switch careers, and I want to be a nurse, I have a passion to do this, so I will, but also want some reassurance that I as a nurse, my safety and the safety of my family matters too. My need to switch to nursing has prompted me to do some research on emerging infections, which has enlightened me to two emerging infections in particular that are the most threatening to our health right now, that is MRSA (MRSA infection is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria – often called “staph.” MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It’s a strain of staph that’s resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA can be fatal.) and C Diff (Clostridium difficile) (also called C. difficile). C Diff is a bacterium that can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to life-threatening inflammation of the colon. Illness from C. difficile most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications, (Clostridium difficile can be fatal.)

You need to familiarize yourself with the term C Diff, as this infection is growing at a rate of at least 10 % a year, you may hear that you harbor this bacteria in your bowels normally and that it only infects your system with an overgrowth by killing your own bacteria with antibiotics, allowing C diff bacteria to take over, apparently this is not always true, you may not have the resistant C Diff living normally in your bowels. With nearly a half a million people infected with this debilitating disease, this should be the number one priority at this time, this illness can cause gut wrenching diarrhea, the cramping and depletion of the body and can lead to death of the lining of the intestinal mucosa, and death to the person infected with this bacteria. There have been reports of persons infected with C Diff that have had over 20 diarrhea stools in one day, how debi
1000
litating this can be, how raw and how much pain can you bear before dying, this has to be one of the worst diseases ever. The people inflicted with this disease may be able to convey just how horrid it can be.

The highest risk factor points to antibiotics, this seems to be the number one factor at this time, which are ordered for infections, many that would be preventable with proper hygiene, including urinary tract infections and respiratory infections. Educate yourself on the use of antibiotics, these should be reserved for true infections, not just for cold symptoms. Prevention is key, when it comes to urinary tract infections, you always wipe from front to back after passing your urine, you never wipe from the back and always avoid getting your stool in the area of your urethra, where your urine comes out, this can lead to a vicious cycle of treating a urinary tract infection with antibiotics which can make you very susceptible to a C Diff infection in your bowels. Use and teach good hand washing techniques, starting with yourself, your children, and others, if your infant has touched any possibly germ ridden surfaces, start by picking up your baby and washing their hands. When you see someone rinsing their hands with a small amount of water, help them learn the importance of using soap and warm water with the proper amount of friction, including under the fingernails to rid their hands of bacteria. Keep your digestive system healthy as your stomach acid naturally kills germs and helps your body absorb vital nutrients. There is an amazingly large percentage of the population using stomach acid reducers, antacids, proton pump inhibitors, examples of proton pump inhibitors include Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, and many more, these reduce your stomach acid and sometimes can inhibit the absorption of calcium protein and more, and may also keep your stomach acid suppressed to the point of not being able to kill invading bacteria and viruses, so talk to your doctor abut the prolonged need for these medications.

My frustration lies with the people who set the standards for nursing, and also give the majority of the people a false sense of security when it comes to prevention, and washing their hands versus using alcohol gel which does not kill this bacteria, C Diff spores can live for up to over a year on most surfaces, I can’t imagine when taking off my gloves on a medication pass and using an alcohol gel on my hands while these C diff spores are doing a happy dance on my clothes and body, only to spread this infection to others. These C Diff spores are found on most surfaces, waiting to germinate in your bowels, touch these surfaces, then touch your mouth and you have ingested theses spores and enabled them to germinate. Common sense would be to wash your hands, arms and clothing as soon as possible. Visit the CDC Hand Hygiene Resource web page to view recommendations for hand hygiene, then take their test as they recommend alcohol based hand gels to kill bacteria, but do you want to kill all bacteria on your hands, and leave c diff to thrive. NO! Once C Diff is identified in any facility, they should have lab testing on various surfaces to begin a rigorous disinfecting process, as this disease is spreading at such a rapid rate, spreading 2 to 3 times faster than MRSA. The only housekeeping products that seem to be effective on C Diff are bleach solutions, not antibacterial products.

Prevention is key to these emerging infections, infection control should be law, not just good practice, and not left to the discretionary spending of any hospital or nursing facility.

Staying Healthy While Travelling In Asia

Food
When you are on holiday there are two things you must remember in regards to food. The first and most important is to eat, and enjoy eating. Make time everyday to eat. It’s not uncommon for travellers to be on both time and money budgets and kind of over look eating as an important part of each day. If you don’t supply your body with fuel, put simply, it will not work for you! Secondly and most obviously is to monitor the quality of the food you put into your body. Yes this means ask yourself if the food is safe, but not only that, is it healthy for you. It’s all too easy while travelling to shove in high energy, cheap and easy to access snack foods and overlook proper balanced meals. Without good food your body will not function properly, you will be more susceptible to illness, have less energy and be prone to headaches, get irritable and enjoy yourself less.

If you are on a budget, go local, look out for busy locally ran places. The busier the place the better the food is likely to be. Also go to the local markets, eat fruit, you will be surprised how cheap and good fruit is in Asia. Its clean, it’s good for you and it’s easy to obtain. Peel able fruit is a good option, if you are susceptible to upset tummies or the water is not too good in that particular country, as an added safety precaution don’t forget to rinse with bottled or purified water.

Of course you don’t want to get sick so check the place over, it’s never going to pristine, but just see, if the food is freshly cooked, or is it in a Bain Marie or reheated? Is the water clean? Are the tables clean? Is the raw produce used acceptable? All these are small signs to the quality of the food, if a proprietor cannot be bothered to clean tables, sweep floors etc he/she is hardly likely to be paying much attention to the cleanliness of your food! Another precaution is, always choose hot food from road side or local restaurants, and never go for warm rice or noodles, huge no, no.

You should note though, that most cases of food poising do not come from the food, it comes from bacteria accumulated on your hands, on plates, cutlery and glasses. So use your common sense -
•	Wash your hands or use a sanitizer gel
•	Carry your own drinking glass and travel cutler
1000
y, or just eat with your hands like locals do
•	Make sure what you order is freshly cooked and not reheated
•	Go for items like noodles, soups and stir fries that are quickly prepared, or meat curries and stews that have been cooked for a long time, just make sure they are re heated sufficiently! Avoid, rice that’s not freshly cooked, dried meat and fish dishes and anything that looks or smells a bit iffy!

Follow these simple rules and you should never get the travellers runs. Remember don’t mistake an upset tummy from change in diet as food poisoning!

Helpful hint: Quite a few trekkers swear by a bottle of coke with each meal, the acid in coke tends to kill off any bacteria taking a lap around your stomach juices.

Water
Drink, drink, drink. Keep yourself alert and hydrated by drinking 2 to 3 litres a day. In most countries in Asia, the tap water is not acceptable for drinking, and even if it is deemed so, I do not advise to drink it unless you are a seasoned traveller whose body has acquired the right balance to do so. Buying bottled water is the best bet, though it’s much better for the environment to carry your own water bottle and either treat the water or go for refills. Many places in Asia allow cheap refills from 10 gallon mineral water jugs. Also hotels should be more than happy to provide filtered or boiled water for you to treat. If you do buy mineral water, always check the seal and sell by date first. Another good tip to save money is to buy water from local shops, it’s the same water just half the price than in your hotel or tourist restaurant! Don’t forget brushing your teeth in some way is consuming water, so if you really don’t want to risk it, use bottled, treated or boiled water when doing so.

Heat
Keep yourself cool and stay fresh. If you are travelling in a hot climate, you need to slow down and pace yourself. Avoid spending excessive time in the sunshine. By wearing loose light layers of clothing and a good pair of sunglasses you will be surprised at how much better you feel. Heat and glare will add to your stress and “over it” levels! Take frequent rests in shady places and drink plenty of fluids. Water is a must but try some local items like coconut milk in south east Asia, fruit or yoghurt lassies in India and Nepal and fresh fruit juices (make sure they don’t add water or use local ice!) in Malaysia and Indonesia, although you will find in most restaurants and hotels in Malaysia that filtered water is used for ice, just ask. Avoid drinking beer, as cold and refreshing as it may be it’s not a good day time substitute for water! Try and plan you day to be most active when it’s cooler in the mornings and evenings and take rest during the hottest part of the day.

Rest & Relaxation
As simple as it sounds, getting enough sleep is vital to being healthy and active and enjoying your holiday. It’s all too easy when you are travelling to cram everything in, be constantly on the move during the day and stay out late at night. You have to remember to take it easy, or else you will burn yourself out and make your body more susceptible to illness. Try and plan your days to give you time sit down and relax, plan your travel and sightseeing schedules to minimize travel time. A little bit of forward thinking can save you headaches and make your holiday that much more enjoyable. It’s also a good idea to get a local travel company to arrange things for you, they will know the best ways to get around so that you can just sit back and enjoy yourself.

If you are on a long holiday, mid holiday you should try and plan a few days in restful place, such as a retreat or beach side resort.

How To Save Water – 101 Ways From The Obvious To The Outrageous

You have probably heard of a number of these water saving strategies, but many will probably be new to you. Either way, don’t just read them and say “That’s a great idea.” Pick a few and make them happen at your house.
1.	Buy an energy star front loading washing machine.
2.	Install a water saving toilet.
3.	Skip taking a shower once in a while.
4.	Wear your clothes more than once between washes.
5.	Use a watering timer when watering your lawn and garden.
6.	Use a moisture meter to make sure you need to water.
7.	Install an instant hot water heater – hot water will be at the tap sooner.
8.	Insulate your hot water pipes.
9.	Install aerators on all of your faucets.
10.	Use a toilet tank water saver.
11.	Turn off the water when you brush your teeth.
12.	Skip shaving once in a while.
13.	Install a waterless urinal.
14.	Replace your thirsty lawn with indigenous, drought resistant plants.
15.	Capture the first gallon of cold water that comes out of your shower and use it to brush your teeth or water your plants.
16.	Install a composting toilet.
17.	Switch to low flow showerheads.
18.	Fix a leaky faucet.
19.	Buy a membership at the pool instead of your own pool.
20.	Put the scraps from your plates in to a worm bin instead of down the disposal.
21.	Stop rinsing off your dishes before you put them in your new dishwasher, they usually don’t need this.
22.	Fix a leaky toilet.
23.	Clean up the dishes immediately after you use them so the leftovers don’t dry on and stick like glue.
24.	Take shorter showers – keep them to five minutes or less.
25.	Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap until the water gets cold.

26.	Fill up your dishwasher before you run it.
27.	Keep potted plants indoors instead of cur flowers.
28.	Install a drip irrigation system in your gardens.
29.	Water your lawn and garden on the morning – less evaporation.
30.	Patronize a carwash that recycles the water it uses.
31.	Make sure that your sprinkler system (or sprinkler) is not watering the sidewalk or street.
32.	Install a dual flush toilet.
33.	Switch to an energy star dishwasher.
34.	Ins
1000
tall covers on pools and spas to help prevent evaporation.
35.	Only do full loads of laundry.
36.	Plant a tree or more to shade your lawn and/or your garden.
37.	Replace water hungry plants for indigenous, drought resistant plants.
38.	Install a greywater (used water from showers and sinks) system and use the water to flush your toilets.
39.	Install a dual flush conversion kit.
40.	Use captured rainwater to fill water features.
41.	Raise your lawn mower setting. Longer grass retains water better.
42.	Don’t run the water when you wash dishes, fill up one sink to wash and another to rinse.
43.	Avoid planting in the summer when watering requirements are higher,
44.	Think about saving water and you will,
45.	Wash produce in a bowl of water or a partially filled sink instead of continuously running the water.
46.	Turn the water off while you shave.
47.	Two uses per flush.
48.	When you take a shower turn off the water while you lather and wash.
49.	Switch to an electric shaver.
50.	Sweep your driveway, patio and deck instead of washing them off with the hose.

51.	Don’t send the water from your downspouts out into the street but direct it towards your shrubs and gardens.
52.	Use a small plate instead of a large one whenever possible, to cut down on dishwasher loads.
53.	Collect the water from your dehumidifier and water your plants with it.
54.	Check to see that your toilet flappers are working properly.
55.	Two young kids in the same tub = ten to twenty gallons of water saved.
56.	Drop that tissue in the trash, not the toilet and save a flush.
57.	Get your kids involved and teach them to turn the water off when they are done washing their hands (for instance).
58.	Stop watering your lawn and garden before the soil becomes saturated.
59.	Use a rain gauge to make sure that you don’t over water your lawn or garden.
60.	Buy a rain barrel and use the water to water your plants.
61.	Adjust your water softener so that it regenerates only as often as necessary.
62.	Use a spray gun nozzle when you wash your car.
63.	Weed your lawn and garden frequently to keep them from stealing water from your plants.
64.	Add compost or other organic matter to your garden soil so that it will retain water better.
65.	Fix or replace a leaky hose bib.
66.	Take the dirty mop water outside and water some plants with it.
67.	Avoid planting in containers as they tend to require more water.
68.	Use hand sanitizer instead of washing your hands sometimes.
69.	Set a sprinkler in the area of lawn that needs water the most when your kids want to cool off.
70.	Steam your vegetables when you cook and give the leftover water to a thirsty plant.
71.	Use one glass all day for your drinking water and it will take longer to fill up your dishwasher.
72.	Capture the water that you washed the produce with to water your houseplants.
73.	Let food thaw in the refrigerator instead of using running water.
74.	Report water line breaks as soon as possible.
75.	Pour the melted ice in your cup on a houseplant.

76.	Shave your head or cut your hair short – you will spend a lot less time washing your hair.
77.	Park your car in the grass before you wash it.
78.	Use collected rainwater to flush your toilets.
79.	Plug the tub before you turn on the water and just add more hot water as it fills up.
80.	Check for leaks in your pool.
81.	Take tandem showers: as soon as one person is done the next hops in.
82.	Avoid using too much fertilizer. Fertilizer promotes plant growth and this will also increase your watering needs.
83.	Give your dog a bath in the water your kids just bathed in.
84.	Plant a rain garden and direct some of your downspouts there.
85.	Mulch your gardens with organic mulch, it will help keep the soil moist.
86.	Jump in the shower before the water gets w
1000
arm and enjoy a refreshing start to your day.
87.	Partially fill the sink with water when rinsing the dishes instead of letting the water continuously run.
88.	Mulch your gardens with recycled rubber mulch, it will allow all of the water to reach your plants and also help to keep the soil from drying out.
89.	Try to use only one plate or bowl per person for each meal, this will lead to fewer dishwasher loads.
90.	Serve food in the pots that you cooked the food in and it will take longer to fill the dishwasher.
91.	Use a soaker hose instead of a sprinkler.
92.	When you refill the pet’s water bowl, give the old water to your plants.
93.	Grow your own vegetables, organically so all they need is a quick rinse.
94.	Water your lawn or garden with the water from your fish tank when it is time to clean it.
95.	Convert a portion of your lawn into a patio or deck – they never need to be watered.
96.	Don’t allow water to run down slopes and hill when you water them. Water for a few short periods with a few minutes between each.
97.	Use organic fertilizers to promote slow healthy growth.
98.	Measure how much you water your lawn or garden with a rain gauge or empty can to prevent over watering.
99.	Water your lawn once every three weeks or less and let your lawn go dormant during the summer.
100.	Put a bucket in the shower with you and use the captured water to flush the toilet.
101.	Share water saving tips with your family and friends.

Have fun and start saving!

Beyond The Bird House: Creating The Perfect Backyard Habitat For Bird Feeding

Bird feeding is one of the most popular hobbies in the United Statessecond only to gardening. So it is only natural that many people combine these two hobbies into one endeavor. When a garden or yard is planned and maintained with the needs of native wildlife in mind, it becomes much more than just a backyard. It is a “backyard habitat.”

Creating a backyard habitat for birds is an enjoyable and easy process. Birds require four basic things to survive: food, water, protection from predators and the elements, and a safe place to raise their young. If possible, leave some of the land on your property untouched. This allows some of the natural habitat to remain intact. Of course, that may not be a realistic option for many people. Most landscapers are well-educated on how to include natural plants and eco-conscious features in today’s landscape design. Select plants that offer food, fruit, insects, ground cover, shelter, seeds and nesting sites.

Even if your yard is well-established and “starting from scratch” is not an option, there are other things you can do to help attract and maintain birds in your backyard. Find out what plants are native in your region. Native plants will best match the diets and habitat requirements of the birds that live in your area. Call a local gardening club for suggestions. Most gardening enthusiasts are eager to share their knowledge and maybe even a cutting or two to get you started.

The easiest way to attract birds to your yard is to provide water. Fresh water is a magnet for attracting birds. Offer clean water every day, and clean you bird baths and water sources regularly. Birds need water to drink and bathe in throughout the year. Plan on using a bird bath de-icer (a small heated element that keeps water in a bird bath from freezing) if your region experiences freezing temperatures in the winter.

Refill your birdbath every day and clean every other day. DO NOT USE BLEACH! Elbow grease is the best way to clean the bird bath. Regular cleaning will keep mosquito larvae away, which you and the birds will surely appreciate. You can also purchase special devices that create vibrations on the water that will keep mosquitoes from laying eggs. The vibrations are gentle and do
1000
not pose any problems for the birds. There are other ways to offer water–such a garden pond or fountain. Fountains are a good choice because they naturally feature moving water that deters mosquitoes and other insects. The sound of flowing water from a fountain or waterfall will also serve the purpose of announcing your “oasis” to the birds in the area. It is also a relaxing and soothing sound that makes your garden a peaceful retreat.

If you choose a bird bath for your water source, it should not be deeper than 3 inches. It is also best if they have a textured bottom and sloping sides. It does not matter if you choose a hanging bird bath or one that sits on a pedestal or the ground. Be sure that you position the bird bath in a location that offers the birds some protection from predators. An open area is the best choice since predators will be unable to sneak up undetected on bathing birds.

Once you have water, you also need to supply food. Not all birds will eat seed. Some eat insects and others, like hummingbirds and orioles, prefer nectar. Offering a variety of feed will help attract a variety of birds. If you are only going to use one type of feed, it’s a good idea to offer a quality mixed seed. Some inferior mixes contain a lot of cheap fillers that birds do not eat. The birds will simply kick this seed out of the feeder and make a mess on the ground below. If you want to avoid a lot of mess below your feeders, look for feed that contains only the meats of seeds. Finches will eat a specific kind of seed called “nyjer” seed (it was incorrectly called “thistle” seed for many years). Nyjer seed requires a special type of feeder, so be sure to know what kind of seed your feeder is meant to dispense.

Offer as many feeding stations as your yard can hold. Space your feeders 30 to 50 feet apart at different elevations. Multiple feeders deter aggressive birds from dominating the stations, and providing ground feeders allow the timid species a place to feed. Make sure your birdfeeders are within short flying distance of cover and perches. Birds need to be able to fly to some place safe if a predator appears. Finally, make sure you frequently clean your feeders so seed will not mold. Thoroughly wash them with soap and warm water. Sterilize with a solution of 1 part bleach and 4 parts water. Rinse them completely and let dry. Keeping your feeders clean is an important step in ensuring that your backyard birds are healthy and free from disease.

After taking care of the basic needs of feeding the birds and providing water, you can also add bird houses to provide habitats for birds to nest and raise their broods. Buying a bird house that is designed for specific species is a good idea if you are trying to attract a certain species of bird. Make sure that the bird house you are buying is made with untreated lumber or non-toxic paint. Bird houses should have ventilation holes and holes in the floor for drainage. It is also important that the bird house has a panel that can be opened so you can clean out the bird house. Mount your bird house high enough to discourage predators and consider using a predator guard to protect vulnerable eggs and chicks from raccoons and snakes.

Dead trees are considered to be eyesores to people, but for birds they are a terrific food source and offer cavity-nesters a place to build a nest. Only remove them if they pose a safety threat. Excavating species (also called “primary cavity nesters”) like woodpeckers will carve out a cavity that other birds (called “secondary cavity nesters”) will use once they become vacant. It is also important to never use insecticides. They eliminate spiders, caterpillars, beetles and other insects that are a very important protein source for birds and their young. Sometimes the best way to create a habitat for wildlife is to leave the one that already exists as natural and unaltered as possible.

Keeping birds safe from predators is not always easy. Using predator guards is helpful for keeping
1000
nests and eggs safe. Natural predators are part of the ecosystem too, and you should not try to interfere too much with the natural order of things, but domestic cats sometimes pose the biggest threat to backyard birds. If a neighbor allows their pet cat to roam the neighborhood, you can ask them to have the cat wear a collar with a bell on it. This allows the birds to have a warning when danger is approaching. If predators such as raccoons become too aggressive or bold, you should call your local Animal Control office to remove the animal safely.

Attracting birds to your backyard is immensely rewarding. You will have the pleasure of watching nature interact. You will become aware of the various subtle changes in bird behavior throughout the seasons. Creating a backyard habitat is not only an environmentally friendly way to share your living space with natural wildlife, it also creates a soothing, restful oasis that can help you enjoy your world more fully.
